What do we know about Season 2 of Sasaki and Miyano?
The series, written and illustrated by Shō Harusono, has been serialized since February 26, 2016, on the Pixiv Comic website. Media Factory has been collecting the chapters in tankōbon volumes since September 26, 2016; as of July 27, 2022, the total volumes amounted to 9. A spin-off titled Hirano to Kagiura, by the same author, has been serialized from March 15, 2019, in Monthly Comic Gene. The chapters have also been collected in tankōbon format starting from June 27, 2019; as of February 26, 2022, the total volumes amounted to 3.
Sasaki and Miyano were also adapted into two novels published from March 26, 2020, to January 27, 2022. Hirano to Kagiura was itself adapted into a single novel released on October 26, 2018.
An anime adaptation was announced on November 20, 2020. The adaptation, which later turned out to be a television series, was animated by Studio Deen and directed by Shinji Ishihara, with Yoshiko Nakamura handling the script and Maki Fujii taking care of the character design, while Kana Shibue composed the soundtrack. The series aired in Japan from January 10 to March 28, 2022, on Tokyo MX and other affiliated networks.
The opening theme was “Matabaki” by Miracle Chimpanzee while the closing one was “Ichigo Sunset” by Yusuke Shirai and Sōma Saitō, respectively the voices of Sasaki and Miyano. An OVA episode was released with the limited edition of the manga’s ninth volume on July 27, 2022. After the airing of the last episode, it was announced that the series would receive a new anime project. It later turned out to be an anime film, titled Sasaki and Miyano: Sotsugyō-hen. It will be released in Japan in 2023, along with a short anime adaptation of the spin-off series Hirano to Kagiura. So, what does all of this tell us about the future of the series?
Taking all of this into account, Sasaki and Miyano‘s future seems very bright, despite the fact that we don’t know whether a second season is going to be made. The source works are, as we have said, quite popular, as was the anime series, and the fact that the franchise has a large fanbase, combined with the fact that we have seen a second season relatively recently, makes us very hopeful. In addition to that, we know that we have an upcoming anime movie sequel, as well as an adaptation of the spin-off story on the way.
In any case, the earliest we could see a potential second season is 2024, but we’d have to get some confirmation on the future during 2022 or after the movie’s 2023 premiere; 2025 is also a solid possibility. Namely, due to a lack of information in general, we have absolutely no clue how far the second season might go if it even happens. Fresh out of high school, Yoshikazu Miyano is a big fan of boys who love manga and is also open about being a fudanshi, at least to his friends at school. Coincidentally, Shūmei Sasaki from the grade above him saves him from some thugs and when Sasaki later notices that Miyano reads manga, he asks him for a recommendation.
As he enjoys the recommended stories, a close friendship quickly develops between the two, and Miyano is happy to have finally found another boy with whom he wants to talk about boys’ love. But Sasaki actually moves much more: He fell in love with the younger student from the first meeting. And that feeling has only grown with the time the two have spent together.
After some time, Sasaki Miyano finally confesses his love. He is unsettled and has not taken the hints seriously until then. Although he likes boy’s love stories very much, he himself has only had one relationship with one girl so far. So Miyano doesn’t want to answer right away and Sasaki also wants to give him the necessary time.
The two have some thoughts as their school years progress and Sasaki enters his senior year – soon they may be separated by his high school diploma. Miyano becomes more and more aware of how much Sasaki means to him, and their friends also realize how they feel for each other. Some try to support her in admitting her love. Eventually, Miyano realizes that he is actually in love with Sasaki, and the two become a couple.
